One UI 9 is the final major Android update for the Galaxy Tab S9 family. Here's when Samsung tablets lose OS and security updates, and which get seven years.

Samsung now offers some of the longest software support in Android, with seven years of updates on its newest tablets. Older models were sold under a shorter promise, though, and for one popular family the end of new Android versions has arrived. As Engadget points out, 2026 is the last year of major OS updates for the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

What changes for Galaxy Tab S9 owners

The Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE and S9 FE+ will get One UI 9, based on Android 17, and that is their final big upgrade. The series launched in 2023 on One UI 5.1 (Android 13) with a promise of four major OS updates and five years of security patches. Android 17 completes those four upgrades.

That does not make the tablets unsafe overnight. Security updates should continue until some time in 2028, so a Tab S9 remains a reasonable device to keep using. What you won't get are the new features that arrive with Android 18 and later One UI versions.

The Tab A9 and A9+ are an interesting case: they are newer than the Tab S8 but have already had their last major upgrade, because they were budget models with a shorter promise. Rugged Tab Active devices for business follow their own schedule.

Newer tablets get seven years

Samsung moved to seven years of OS and security updates with the Galaxy Tab S10 series in 2024, and the Tab S11 and the new Galaxy Tab S12 lineup keep that promise. Even the inexpensive Galaxy Tab A11 and A11+ from 2025 qualify. If you buy from Samsung's current range, end of support is years away.

That is a better deal than some rivals offer: Sony, for example, recently cancelled a promised Android 17 update for the Xperia 10 VI.

How to check for updates

Rollouts vary by model and region, so not seeing One UI 9 yet doesn't mean your tablet has been left out. Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install, and tap Install now if an update is waiting. Keep the tablet on charge during big installs; our USB-C charger guide explains which chargers suit Samsung's fast charging.
