Limitations related to the device’s storage configuration mean the Xperia 10 VI does not support an Android 17 upgrade experience that we consider adequate.

Sony is breaking a software promise on the midrange Xperia 10 VI. The phone launched on Android 14 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and a pledge of three major OS upgrades — which would have included Android 17. A UK support notice, reported by The Verge, says that will not happen.

Why Sony is stopping

After a “detailed technical assessment,” Sony says storage configuration limits mean it cannot deliver an Android 17 upgrade it considers adequate. OS updates for this model are ending; security updates are still planned for four years, which Sony ties to roughly June 2028.

Sony stresses the decision applies only to the Xperia 10 VI specs and not to other Xperia models’ promised OS paths — though future Android requirements remain unknown.

Our take

“Three OS versions” is a selling point buyers rely on. Walking it back for storage reasons is better than a silent stall, but it still leaves owners short of the roadmap they were sold. If you own a 10 VI, plan on staying on Android 16 (or whatever the last major update was) and treat security patches as the remaining support clock.
