Samsung's big Android 17 update is now rolling out beyond South Korea. According to SamMobile, stable One UI 9.0 started reaching the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra in Europe on 19 October. Several mid-range Galaxy A phones are getting it too. Samsung itself hasn't published a schedule for this wave, so treat the regions below as reported rollouts. Here's what we know.

Who gets it first

  • Galaxy S23 series (Europe): the first wave seems aimed at phones enrolled in the One UI 9 beta. For them the download is a modest 516.69 MB (firmware ending in GZIF). SamMobile expects non-beta phones and more countries to follow shortly. GalaxyClub reports it arriving in the Netherlands, Belgium and the rest of Europe.
  • Galaxy A56: rolling out with the Middle East first, as a full 2.3 GB download.
  • Galaxy A37 and A27: after Korea last week, now spreading in Europe, as AndroidPure summarises.

What changes

The headline features listed by SamMobile and GalaxyClub:

  • Quick Panel: more ways to customise the quick settings and notification shade.
  • Samsung DeX and Samsung Notes: improvements to both.
  • Accessibility: a set of upgrades.
  • Location privacy indicator: a blue icon or dot appears when an app asks for your location.
  • Warranty and service menu and extra secure lock options.

The S23 series and A56 get the October security patch with the upgrade. The A27 and A37 ship it on the September patch.

The catch for A-series owners

Galaxy A phones get the new OS without the extra Galaxy AI features in One UI 9. Those stay on the Galaxy S, Z and Tab S lines. GalaxyClub also reports that on the A27 and A37, the Gallery app loses its Google integration and built-in OneDrive sync. If you relied on Gallery to back up photos to OneDrive, set up syncing in the OneDrive app after updating.

The S23's last big upgrade

The S23 launched in February 2023 with One UI 5.1 (Android 13) and a promise of four OS upgrades. That makes One UI 9 most likely its final major Android version. Security updates continue under Samsung's five-year commitment. The newer Galaxy S26 FE ships with One UI 9 out of the box and seven years of updates. And the Galaxy A37, launched this March with six years of support, is still in line for One UI 9.5.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check for One UI 9 on my Galaxy?

Open Settings, tap Software update, then Download and install. Samsung releases updates in stages, so it may take days to reach your phone and country.

Is One UI 9 the last update for the Galaxy S23?

It is very likely the last major Android upgrade, because Samsung promised the S23 four OS upgrades. Security patches continue until the five-year support window ends.

Should I back up before updating?

Yes. Back up photos and data first, keep at least half a charge or stay plugged in, and leave a few gigabytes of free storage for the download.
