Tesla is making it easier to drive away in a new car in China, if not cheaper overall. On Friday the company launched a new financing plan that lowers the minimum down payment on 5-year zero-interest loans for the Model 3 and Model Y to 39,900 yuan (about $5,940), CnEVPost reports. That is half the 79,900 yuan required under the zero-interest offer Tesla announced in September.

What the offer covers

The plan applies to orders placed from 30 October to 30 November. Eligible cars are the Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range All-Wheel Drive versions of both the Model 3 and Model Y. The six-seat Model Y L is also included, with a minimum down payment of 59,900 yuan.

According to Tesla's promotional posters, as summarised by CnEVPost:

  • Model 3 RWD (235,500 yuan, after a 10,000-yuan limited-time discount): 39,900 yuan down and up to about 2,429 yuan a month over five years.
  • Model Y RWD (263,500 yuan, after a 4,000-yuan discount): 39,900 yuan down and up to about 2,995 yuan a month.
  • Model Y L (339,000 yuan, after a 4,000-yuan discount): 59,900 yuan down and up to about 3,920 yuan a month.

Those low monthly figures rely on a final balloon payment at the end of the term. Buyers who prefer no balloon can choose a plan with the same down payments and higher monthly instalments, for example about 3,094 yuan for the Model 3 RWD. Financing is subject to lender approval.

Why Tesla is doing this

Sales pressure. Tesla delivered 64,837 cars in China in September, down 9.35% year on year and its fourth monthly decline in a row, according to China Passenger Car Association data compiled by CnEVPost. Over the first nine months of 2026, its China deliveries fell almost 12% to 381,088, even as exports from the Shanghai factory roughly doubled.

What it means for buyers

A smaller down payment lowers the upfront cost, but the total you pay for the car does not change much, and a balloon payment has to be covered at the end.
