Update (20 October 2026): Apple has confirmed a 'Pro and Tell' launch event in Los Angeles on 28 October. Details in our event report.
Apple has resisted touchscreens on the Mac for more than a decade, but that may end within weeks. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and his Power On newsletter, a redesigned MacBook Pro with a touch display could be announced as early as 27 October and reach customers around 6 November, 9to5Mac reports. Apple has not announced anything yet, so treat all of this as a report, not a confirmed spec sheet. Here is what is expected.
A tandem OLED touchscreen
The new MacBook Pro is expected to switch to a tandem OLED panel, with two stacked OLED layers, like the iPad Pro. That design is known for strong contrast, rich colour and high brightness. Apple has also left hints in macOS 27: touch support in Sidecar, pull-to-refresh and slightly larger menu bar items.
A smaller Dynamic Island, but no Face ID
Reports say the display will get a Dynamic Island, a little smaller than the one on the iPhone. It will not bring Face ID, though.
Touch-aware macOS controls
Gurman says Apple has built special touch features beyond what is visible in the macOS 27 betas. Touching a button or control will bring up a new kind of menu around your finger with relevant touch options. The system will also pick the most suitable set of controls based on how you used it before, and tapping the menu bar will enlarge its controls so they are easier to hit with a finger.
M5 Pro and M5 Max, not M6
Earlier reports pointed to new M6 chips, but Apple is now said to be skipping the M6 Pro and M6 Max to speed up the M7 generation. The touchscreen models would therefore use the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max. There will be no base model at first; a cheaper version with an M7 chip is rumoured for as early as next spring. If you are deciding how much memory such a machine needs, our guides on how much RAM you need and choosing a laptop for local AI are a good starting point.
A slimmer, much lighter body
The chassis is expected to be slightly thinner, and Bloomberg has reported that the laptops will be "significantly lighter" thanks to re-engineered internal parts. How much lighter has not been reported.
Why 6 November
No Apple release is scheduled for that date yet. But Gurman says Apple is planning a "reset" of its retail stores on the evening of 5 November into 6 November, which usually means new signage and products on the tables. That would make four straight weeks of Apple launches, after the iPhone Duo, the HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K and the HomeView display.
