Gemini's Personal Intelligence comes to Android Auto

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto, so it can use Gmail, Calendar, Photos and Maps while you drive. It skips the EU and UK.

Google wants the assistant in your car to know more about you. On Tuesday evening the company said Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in, and it started rolling out Personal Intelligence for in-car use, according to Google's announcement.

What Personal Intelligence does in the car

Personal Intelligence is the feature that lets Gemini look at the Google apps you already use: Gmail and Calendar (Workspace), Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Instead of giving generic answers, it can pull a detail out of an email, a photo or a saved place and combine several sources in one reply.

Google's own examples show the idea:

  • "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" Gemini finds the booking email and checks for delays in a single answer.
  • "Take me to my doctor's appointment." No need to know the street address; Gemini reads it from your calendar.
  • "Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there." It identifies the place from your photo library.
  • "Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe." If you're vegetarian, Google says the shortlist will reflect that.

The pitch is safety as much as convenience: fewer reasons to pick up the phone while driving. We haven't tried it ourselves, so how well it handles real, messy requests remains to be seen.

Privacy and who gets it

The feature is opt-in. Your apps aren't connected until you switch it on in Gemini settings, and you can turn it off at any time. One catch: if you already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini phone app, that choice carries over to the car automatically. On cars with Google built-in, Google says personal answers are only shared when you're in the car with your phone connected. Without the feature, navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working, just without personal context.

Availability is limited. It's for eligible personal Google accounts of users 18 and over, and it is not offered in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria, Android Authority notes. Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded.

Rollout starts now on Android Auto, with cars with Google built-in (Android Automotive) following "in the coming months". It's another step in carmakers and tech firms putting AI assistants on the dashboard, after Rivian opened its car to third-party AI agents. Shopping for an EV with good software? Frequently asked questions

Do I have to turn Personal Intelligence on for Android Auto?

It is opt-in. But if you already enabled it in the Gemini app on your phone, Google says the setting follows you into the car, so check your Gemini settings if you don't want it.

Is it available in Ukraine or Europe?

Google's eligibility notes exclude the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria. It has not published a full country list, so availability elsewhere depends on your account and region.

Which cars get it?

Any car that runs Android Auto from your phone gets it as the rollout reaches you. Cars with Google built-in (Android Automotive) get it later, in the coming months, according to Google.
