Yamaha is moving its electric two-wheelers beyond slow city mopeds. The company has unveiled the NMAX E, a battery-electric version of its best-selling NMAX sport scooter, positioned as a 125cc-equivalent machine for the A1 licence class, reports Electrek.

Motor and battery

The scooter uses Yamaha's new compact eAxle drive unit, which turns the rear wheel through a belt. Yamaha quotes 6.7 kW (9 hp) nominal and 7.5 kW (10 hp) peak power with 33.3 Nm of torque. A top speed has not been published, but the A1 classification puts it in the same bracket as petrol 125 cc scooters rather than 45 km/h mopeds.

Power comes from a 3.5 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted low in the middle of the frame. Yamaha claims up to 104 km (65 miles) on the WMTC Class 1 test cycle. Real-world range will be lower at higher speeds or with a passenger.

Charging: fixed pack, onboard charger

Unlike many electric scooters, the NMAX E does not have swappable batteries. Instead it carries an 800 W onboard charger, so you plug the scooter itself into a household socket or a public Type 2 AC charger. A 0–100% charge takes about 5.5 hours — fine overnight, slow for a quick top-up. If you are new to plugs and charging speeds, our guide to EV charging connector types explains what Type 2 means.

Features

  • Three riding modes: Sport, Touring and Eco, plus regenerative braking
  • Traction control, ABS and 245 mm discs front and rear
  • 13-inch wheels, 33 mm fork, twin rear shocks and a reverse mode
  • 5-inch TFT screen linked to Yamaha's Motor On app (navigation, battery status, maintenance reminders)
  • Keyless start, USB-C port, LED lights and lit underseat storage that can take some full-face helmets

Price and availability

Yamaha has not announced pricing or exact markets yet; the NMAX E is presented as a 2027 model for Europe. We will update this story when prices are confirmed.

Why it matters

Big motorcycle makers have mostly treated electric scooters as side projects. Putting the NMAX name — and familiar styling — on a 125-class electric model signals that Yamaha now sees electric as part of its mainstream line-up. Considering a two-wheeler instead of a car?
