Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, the sequel to Auroch Digital's 2023 pixel-art "boomer shooter", is due out today, 14 October, on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Publisher Big Fan Games, part of Devolver Digital, says a Nintendo Switch 2 version will follow shortly after, without a fixed date yet.

Two heroes this time

The story picks up where the first game ended. Ultramarine Malum Caedo returns as a Sternguard Veteran, and he is joined by a second playable character, Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath, who is faster and fights with fire. The two travel to an isolated star system where the daemonic demigod Vashtorr the Arkifane wakes a huge machine at a planet's core and wipes out much of the Imperial fleet.

What's new

According to the Steam page and the studio's release notes, the sequel adds:

  • a branching single-player campaign, where each path has its own levels;
  • new weapons alongside the chainsword and shotgun from the first game;
  • new enemies, including Bloodletters and their daemonic Juggernauts, plus returning Nurglings and Chaos Cultists;
  • new biomes, from hive-city towers to jungle mangrove swamps;
  • a navigation guide that keeps you pointed at the fight.

The release-date trailer debuted an original track by guest composer Mick Gordon, known for DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.

Price

At the time of writing, the Steam store lists Boltgun 2 at $24.99 with a 10% launch discount ($22.49). Prices vary by region and platform, so check your local store. On PC it is listed for Windows only.
