Ford is inviting buyers to join a preorder invite list for the Fathom, its upcoming midsize electric pickup, according to Electrek. Official preorders are still planned for early 2027, with first deliveries later that year from the Louisville Assembly Plant.

Price and platform

The company lists a starting price of $28,350 for the standard-range battery model — about half the price of the F-150 Lightning. With the $1,595 destination fee, the truck would still come in under $30,000. The Fathom is the first vehicle on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform.

Ford has not published driving range, towing capacity or final dimensions yet. Prototypes spotted on the road look closer to Maverick size, even though Ford describes the Fathom as a midsize four-door pickup.

Cabin, software and charging

Ford says the Fathom will offer more passenger room than a Toyota RAV4, not counting the frunk or bed, and claims a lower five-year cost of ownership than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y. The cabin gets a large touchscreen and will be the first Ford with Apple Maps built into the navigation system, plus Digital Key, the Ford app, and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto.

Every Fathom will be BlueCruise-capable for hands-free highway driving and will support bidirectional charging. The pack is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and doubles as the vehicle floor — cobalt- and nickel-free — which Ford says lowers the centre of gravity and frees interior space. Test mules have been seen with a NACS charge port at Tesla Superchargers.

Ford also pitches a fun drive: low centre of gravity, instant torque and chassis tuning aimed at a 0–60 mph time as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost. Those claims remain unverified until production specs appear.

Timeline and tone from leadership

CEO Jim Farley told the Automotive News Congress it will be “a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time.” A Ford spokesperson told Electrek there is no change to the 2027 launch plan. Buyers can sign up for invite updates on Ford’s site while waiting for the early-2027 preorder window.
