Aqara has introduced the Outdoor Plug H2 EU, a weatherproof smart plug for garden lights, pond pumps, patio heaters and holiday decorations, as reported by HomeKit News and Reviews. It is listed at €32.99 in Aqara's EU store. It is unusual because you choose its radio: Thread or Zigbee. That choice decides which features you get.

The basics

According to Aqara's spec sheet, the plug (model SP-P06E) handles 16 A / 3,680 W, is rated IP44 (splashes, not submersion) and works from −20 °C to 50 °C. It monitors power in real time with daily and monthly charts, cuts power on overload or at 80 °C, and uses no more than 0.4 W at idle. An optional charging-protection mode switches off after 30 minutes below 3 W, so a charged battery doesn't sit on the plug all night. There's a standard model and an RGB version with a coloured light ring. Aqara says different versions are sold through different retailers.

Thread vs Zigbee

Thread modeZigbee mode
Hub neededNo Aqara hub; needs a Matter controller and Thread border routerAqara Zigbee hub (older hubs work)

Configurable load limitNoYes
LED indicator settings and LED automationsNot yet (Aqara says a future update)Yes
Device removal protectionNoYes

The core features, on/off, schedules, energy monitoring and overload protection, are what most people need, and Aqara doesn't mark any of them as Zigbee-only. The extras do. Aqara's page says a configurable maximum load and LED configuration need Zigbee plus an Aqara hub, and that Thread support for the LED settings will come "in a future update", with no date.

+ Pros

  • Choice of Thread (Matter) or Zigbee in one plug
  • 16 A rating covers heaters and pumps
  • Energy monitoring and auto-off for chargers

− Cons

  • IP44 only protects against splashes, so keep it out of puddles
  • Some settings are Zigbee-only for now
  • RGB version may not be sold everywhere

New to these protocols? Our Matter and Thread explainer covers border routers and why Thread devices respond quickly. For outdoor lighting to plug in, see SwitchBot's Matter outdoor lights.

Our verdict

Thread for simplicity, Zigbee for control

If you already have an Apple TV, HomePod, Nest hub or Echo that works as a Thread border router, Thread mode is the easy choice: no extra hub, and it works in your existing app. If you already run an Aqara hub, use Zigbee to get the load limit, LED options and removal protection. Neither mode makes the plug waterproof, so use it in a covered IP44 socket.
