Wide foldables have been a surprise hit, and the shape may now spread to regular phones. According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is working on a non-folding "slab" phone with a wide screen, similar to the cover displays of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo, Android Authority reports.
What the leak says
- The phone would be a conventional bar, not a foldable, with a shorter, wider display.
- It could use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, more typical of folding phones.
- No screen size, chip, camera or launch date was mentioned.
For a sense of scale, the recently launched Xiaomi 18 Fold — a wide foldable — has a 5.38-inch cover screen with an aspect ratio close to 3:2. A wide slab of roughly that size would be a reasonable guess, but that is not part of the leak.
A new phone category forming
Huawei already sells the Pura X View, a wide non-folding phone. OPPO is rumoured to be working on one with two 200 MP cameras, and the same leaker previously said vivo and Honor aim to launch wide slab phones by 2027. Many first-generation models may stay in China.
Treat all of this as unconfirmed until Xiaomi announces something.
