Xbox Cloud Playtime packs: $3.99 for 10 hours, no Game Pass
Xbox Insiders can now buy ad-free Cloud Playtime packs from $3.99 for 10 hours to stream games they own, ahead of a wider November rollout and new Game Pass caps.

Microsoft has put a price on Xbox cloud gaming for people who don't subscribe to Game Pass. In a post on Xbox Wire, the company says members of the Xbox Insider programme can now buy Cloud Playtime packs and stream eligible games they own, with a broader rollout to all players planned for November.
The prices
Microsoft calls these "introductory launch" prices, so they may change later:
- 10 hours for $3.99
- 25 hours for $7.99
- 50 hours for $11.99
That works out to roughly 40 cents an hour for the smallest pack and about 24 cents an hour for the largest, as Ars Technica calculated. Microsoft says the packs are ad-free, come with shorter wait times and higher-quality streaming, and that purchased hours don't expire until you use them.
What you need
The packs don't include any games. Microsoft says you need to own a cloud-playable game, or use a selected free-to-play title, to stream it. That's the key difference from Game Pass, which bundles a catalogue with a monthly allowance of cloud hours. Eurogamer notes that even paying users can still face queues at peak times, just shorter ones.
Insiders can also keep using the free, ad-supported cloud option Microsoft began testing earlier this year. Windows Central reports that the free tier in the Insider test is limited to 30-minute sessions.
Why now: Game Pass hour caps
The packs arrive just before monthly limits on Game Pass cloud streaming take effect in November. According to Windows Central and TechPowerUp, Ultimate ($22.99 a month) will include 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, Premium ($14.99) 10 hours and Essential ($9.99) 5 hours. Microsoft has said it expects only a small share of subscribers to hit the cap, and that those who do will be able to buy more playtime from the Xbox Store. It hasn't yet confirmed whether these exact packs will serve as top-ups for subscribers.
