Spotify has launched a next-generation native in-car app, and Audi is the first carmaker to get it. Starting 21 October, owners can install it from the Audi Application Store in the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, as well as the A5, Q5 and A6. Both Free and Premium accounts work. The upcoming Q7 and Q9 SUVs will get it at their market launch, and availability varies by model and market.

What changes

The app runs directly on the car's infotainment system rather than being mirrored from a phone. You sign in once by scanning a QR code or entering a code at spotify.com/pair, and after that playback is ready when you start the car, with no cable or Bluetooth pairing needed. Spotify notes that an Audi connect package may be required.

  • While driving, video and lyrics are blocked on the centre screen and voice control comes first, through "Hey Audi" or Spotify's DJ.
  • When parked or charging, the main display can show full-screen video podcasts, music videos and live lyrics.
  • Front passengers with a separate screen can browse and watch video, and anyone can scan a QR code to join an in-car Spotify Jam and add songs to a shared queue.

Our take

This is a small launch with a big direction behind it. Android Auto and CarPlay made the car a dumb screen for your phone; a native app makes the car its own account-aware device. The win is convenience: no "which phone is connected?" fights, and a better use of downtime at a charger. The open questions are how fast it reaches other brands (Spotify promises more partners over the coming year) and how well it handles patchy mobile data in the car's own connection.

Google is pushing the other way, putting more AI into phone projection: see our story on Gemini Personal Intelligence in Android Auto. And if you spend a lot of time waiting at chargers, our home EV charger guide explains how to charge faster at home instead.
