Android’s new scam shields: Gemini in Google Messages, call-forwarding blocks and screen-share privacy
Opt-in Enhanced protection uses cloud Gemini via Private AI Compute and on-device Gemini Nano for unfamiliar links. Chat scam alerts expand to more OEMs.

Google is adding a new layer of scam defenses across calls, texts and chat apps, according to an Android security post dated 14 October 2026. The headline change is an opt-in Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages, plus broader notification alerts and safeguards against call forwarding and screen-share snooping.
Enhanced protection in Google Messages
Google says Enhanced protection will roll out in the coming weeks. When enabled it unlocks:
- Scam Detection with Private AI Compute — cloud Gemini models review complex conversations with an unknown sender to spot slow-burn social engineering. Google says the analysis runs in Private AI Compute, with data encrypted and inaccessible to Google or others during that processing.
- Smarter link checks with Gemini Nano — on-device AI plus real-time web signals to judge unfamiliar links before you tap (availability limited to newer flagships such as Pixel 10+ and select Galaxy devices, per Google’s footnotes).
- Clearer checkpoints for links from numbers not in your contacts.
Existing on-device Scam Detection stays; Enhanced protection is meant to catch novel attacks that slip past simpler filters.
Beyond Messages
Google is also expanding scam detection in chat notifications — first seen on Pixel — to hundreds of millions more users later this year through partners including HONOR, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, Xiaomi and others.
On the call side, Android will block apps from quietly turning on call forwarding and warn if someone tries to trick you into MMI forwarding codes (Pixel and select devices from early December, Google says). During live screen shares, sensitive fields in Chrome and Android WebView can be blanked automatically (rolling out this month on Android 15+).
Context Google cites
Google says AI-powered Scam Detection in Phone by Google and Google Messages already flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts monthly. Separately it cites a Google-commissioned Leviathan Security Group assessment comparing built-in scam tools across platforms — treat that as company-funded research, not an independent regulator’s scorecard.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to turn Enhanced protection on?
Yes — Google describes it as an opt-in setting in Google Messages, rolling out in the coming weeks.
Will Google read my messages in the cloud?
Google says Enhanced protection’s cloud analysis uses Private AI Compute with encryption so the data stays inaccessible to Google during that processing. Optional spam reports are a separate flow.
Is this only for Pixel?
Enhanced protection is for Google Messages; notification scam alerts are expanding to many OEM brands. Some link and AI features need newer AICore-capable devices.
If you already ignore unknown texts, Enhanced protection is still worth watching once it appears in settings — especially for relatives who click every link.
