NVIDIA DLSS 5 gets a 2x faster model and comes to Hogwarts Legacy on 5 November

NVIDIA has outlined the next steps for DLSS 5, the version of its AI rendering tech that adds 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. It launched last month in NBA 2K27, and now it is getting a much faster model, new games and support for modders.

A model twice as fast

NVIDIA says pipeline optimisations and model refinements make the neural rendering model 2x faster this week. The October update shrinks the model by 24% to about 118 million parameters and cuts 4K VRAM use by 20%, which gives half the GPU overhead of the September version with comparable image quality. Overall, NVIDIA says the model is now 10x faster than when it was announced in March.

The new model arrives in NBA 2K27 on 16 October on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops and GeForce NOW. NVIDIA says it raises frame rates by up to 1.4x, and it will ship by default in future DLSS 5 games.

New games and devices

• RTX Spark laptops get DLSS 5 on 16 October.
• Hogwarts Legacy adds DLSS 5 on 5 November (RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark). Developer Avalanche Software used the SDK controls to keep the game's art style.
• Where Winds Meet gets DLSS 5 in late November.

NVIDIA explains that, unlike upscaling or frame generation, neural rendering uses the game's own rendered frame as a base and adds more realistic lighting and material detail on top.

Faster Frame Generation (beta)

A new NVIDIA app beta adds a Frame Generation Performance Mode, labelled "Preset C", for RTX 40 and 50 Series GPUs and RTX Spark laptops. It replaces one of the two AI models with a lighter algorithm. NVIDIA says it is up to 35% faster on an RTX 5060, with minor image quality trade-offs. You enable it under Graphics → Driver Settings → DLSS Override – Model Presets.

DLSS 5 for modders

On 23 October, RTX Remix gets DLSS 5 and the new Frame Generation mode. Modders get the same controls as developers, including masking and per-object presets. NVIDIA showed early results in community Fallout 4 and Mirror's Edge RTX projects.
