Atari VCS store closes Feb 1, 2027, but consoles keep working
Atari will shut the VCS software store on February 1, 2027, then ship an OS update that removes server checks and add a homebrew app so the console lives on offline.

Atari is doing the one thing most companies skip when a platform dies: cutting the cord to its own servers before it pulls the plug.

The Atari VCS is being retired. According to an announcement on the Atari Club Discord, first reported by Tom's Hardware and covered by The Verge, the console's online software store will shut down on February 1, 2027. Owners can keep buying and downloading software until January 31, 2027.
What happens to your console
Anything you've already downloaded keeps working. More importantly, Atari says that after the store closes it will release an OS update that "migrates all functionality to your local machine", removing the console's dependence on Atari's servers for authentication and software. It also plans an Atari Home Brew app, so owners can keep adding games that third-party developers share with the community.
Our take
The VCS had a rough life: years of delays and a crowdfunding campaign whose backers needed reassurance that the project wasn't doomed. It ended up as a Linux-based, AMD-powered mini PC with a library of classic Atari games built in, plus streaming apps and, later, cloud services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now.
What deserves credit is the exit plan. When an online store closes, the usual risk is that purchases tied to a login server quietly stop working. A local-only update and an official homebrew route are the opposite of that, and they're the kind of shutdown every connected device should get. It's a useful contrast with the way streaming access now depends on paid hours, as with Microsoft's new Xbox Cloud Playtime packs.
If you're keeping a VCS as a small living-room PC, a decent pad matters more than ever; our new PC game controller buying guide explains what to look for, and our gaming monitor guide covers the screen side.
Atari hasn't given a date for the OS update yet, so owners should download everything they want before January 31.
